My wife laughed at me for buying one of these owls in an attempt to
keep flickers from putting holes in our house. But they actually do keep
them away! I even took it down one evening because of wind, and the
next morning the flickers were back tapping on the house. I put the owl
back up, and they haven't been back since. I am very satisfied with this
product.
Next door neighbors & I started battling
Ca. Magpies to get in & out of our homes 3 years ago. Back then I'd
phoned the local Ag Dept., & they said these are protected. Research
on UK sites recommended fake owls. I purchased a Dalen bobble head 3
years ago that keeps them from invading the front yard. However, they
are becoming braver about their efforts to make a rookery out of the
neighbor's 5 "berry" producing trees along our backyard property line -
making millions of staining little birdy bombs all over my
garbage/recycle bins. For nighttime I cut & sewed 2 inexpensive owl
printed garden flags into a stuffed owl & painted glow eyes hanging
it in one tree (I now realize glow eyes on cardboard at night would do
as well). For daytime I got this particular Dalen non bobble because it
was so inexpensive. Before I left for the day yesterday, I got to see an
instant "notice to vacate" reaction in the birds who left the trees
immediately, & they haven't returned. They do move a block away each
time I've added a new owl & stay always far enough away we can all
get in & out of our homes over the last 3 years - someday maybe they
won't return. The birds show no fear of us humans, but when I've
removed "Bobbles" for high wind notices & returned him to his place
they leave quickly. I do intend to switch the two Dalen owls on their
poles occasionally. I'm suspicious some types of birds don't see owls as
predators, but Magpies & crows seems to run!
After
reading all the reviews still skeptical but ordered anyway as having
bird problems. I live in the country and have alot of birds and they
were picking away at the vapor barrier area on the inside of the roof of
my garage area. The first day all the birds were gone---after awhile I
would see a few and some beginning to enter the area but soon reversed
and left--haven't had a problem since. Again as others mentioned in the
reviews, move the owl every month or so even just a foot----surprised it
worked for me!
