Gluten Free Birthday

Gluten Free birthdays can still be full of fun. You may not be able to walk into your local bakery and order a birthday cake but you can have your gluten free cake and eat it too!

"Let them eat cake", wheat free cake. You can buy a ready made gluten free cake and doctor it up "birthday style" with frosting, sprinkles, and candles. Specialty cake mixes are another option. Making a gluten free cake with alternative flour from scratch is another way to make your child's birthday treat. Include the birthday boy in the process. What colors, flavors, toppings would they enjoy most? You can also buy non-edible cake toppers with your child's favorite characters.

Before the cake, though, you'll need a kid-friendly birthday meal. How about a Mexican themed meal (tacos, shredded cheddar, salad, gluten free soy crumbles). Guacamole and salsa will make the parents happy too.Carry the motif through with a fun pinata activity.

A barbeque is very gluten friendly. You'll want to be careful with sauces and condiments (some contain wheat starch). Rolls can be omitted or purchased gluten-free. Sizzling burgers and dogs are sure to put smiles on the kids' faces. Fruit kebobs are a refreshing "safe" choice after grilling.

Another great option for a birthday party is make-your-own sundaes. Skip the cones and have lots of flavors and toppings available. An ice-cream party can be customized to avoid most allergies (wheat free dairy free, soy free, nut free, egg free).

When planning your child's special day don't forget that food is only a small part of the celebration. Kids just want to have fun. Give some thought to what your child (and his friends) might really enjoy. A simple pin the tale on the donkey is still a classic. Some kids enjoy arts and crafts or sports activities. It doesn't have to be expensive or fancy. Simple, good old fashioned fun.

Decorations are another non-food way to make the day festive. Brightly colored streamers, balloons, tablecloths, paper goods all state "The party's here". Again, involve your child in picking a theme and color scheme.

Remind your child that while he may be "the birthday boy" everyone enjoys feeling special. Have him help prepare party bags for his friends with you. Getting presents is nice but giving is where it's at!
