If I could wave a magic wand over the Earth to make everyone be nicer to
one another, I would. But, so far, I have not found that elusive wand.
As
your children head back to school concerns about bullies may be on your
mind. The media has been covering this topic in-depth for several
years.
What can you do? You can't quit your job and escort your
child from class to class. Most children would not want you to do that
anyway. They want freedom to socialize with their peers. You can't
encourage them to fight back because any aggression, even in
self-defense, within the confines of educational institutions is likely
to cause your child considerable trouble.
Step back and think
about who is bullied. It is not the confident child who is bullied.
Children with low self-esteem, children who tend are fearful, and
children who are bullied outside of school become the victims of
bullying on school grounds. Well, the ones who are bullied at home can
go both ways--they either become bullies or victims of bullies.
A child's self-confidence plays a huge role in whether a bully will target him or her.
Let's
step back a little further and see what causes a bully. Bullies aren't
born bad. They are products of their environments and their personal
interpretations of their experiences. We all create back-stories to
explain the events in our lives. One child can experience an event and
have a healthy explanation (back-story) while another explains the same
circumstances as reflecting poorly on themselves. Many believe being
harsh with oneself encourages growth and success. The opposite is true.
People who believe they can, who are optimistic and positively focused,
are more successful and healthier.
So, sometimes it is the
circumstances that create the bully--harsh environments that only the
most powerful minds will interpret in ways that retain healthy attitudes
about self. Other times, it is not understanding that their first
thoughts about a situation are merely one interpretation from millions
of possible interpretations. They choose an explanation that feels
disempowering and keep that definition going. Bullying is an attempt to
regain some of that lost power.
