Whenever I was assigned a new batch of students, one of the routine
activities in the first class was to ask one of the students to name
three 'most intelligent students' in the class. The responses were
largely uniform in one sense. More often than not, the three named by
the student did not include his own name. It opened my eyes to the fact
that something basic was missing as we, teachers, are busy giving inputs
to our young friends.
If you don't believe in yourself, no one else will.
It follows that if you can't respect yourself, no one else will care to.
Self-esteem,
then, is to be considered among the first traits that must be instilled
in children right from their tender years. This calls for lot of
encouragement, appreciation and positive reinforcement.
How does a
child ever learn to respect himself if he has experienced a lot of
scolding, reprimanding, controlling, authority, beating and negative
reinforcement? Schools that divide students into X and Y groups on the
basis of 'merit' and teachers who justify corporal punishment with the
rationalization that they are doing it 'for the good of the student'
must think again. Calling a child stupid or good for nothing is
synonymous with paving his way to becoming stupid. It is done by
destroying the fabric of his self-esteem. The process of restoration
won't be that easy.
Every feeling corresponds either to OKness or
Not-OKness. Learn to assess it. When you feel down-and-out, when you're
full of self-pity or when you feel discouraged by someone's harsh
words, know that you have allowed yourself to go into the destructive
Not-OK position. That brings down your energy level, makes you weak,
fills you with fear and therefore comes in the way of your optimum
performance prospect. Parents and teachers would do well to make it a
point to help the children analyze their feelings and moods and also to
guide them not to be carried away by these highs and lows.
Let's
teach our kids to learn to smile a lot; to learn to feel alive; to learn
to count their blessings; to keep celebrating the simple fact that
they're still alive; to do things that make them feel good.
Let's
tell them the story of the phoenix that rises from its ashes and comes
back to life; of Steve Jobs, former Apple CEO, who refused to lose heart
even in the face of death; of his struggle against pancreatic cancer
before he was restored as the CEO of Apple, a position he'd lost more
than a decade before; of the septuagenarian Anna Hazare who brought the
government of India to its knees.
