First Alert SC9120B Hardwire Combination Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Alarm

Received three BRK SC9120B replacements after original units (4 years old) started a low battery chirp with new Duracell batteries. Spoke with BRK rep. about problem and they sent three new units with Duracell batteries. The units worked fine for about two weeks before all three started to chirp a low battery signal. In that time our other three BRK smoke only detectors that were installed 4 years ago started the same chirping sound. Again called BRK and they were going to send us three replacements for them. After the nightmare of having six four year old BRK products fail in a matter of three weeks and three brand new replacement units fail in two weeks. I would stay away from BRK! I have read elsewhere about an issue with BRK and Duracell so I was a bit surprised when the new units arrived with Duracell batteries in them.

My condo unit had this alarm installed when I moved it. It was located at least 25 feet from the kitchen, around a corner and down a hallway, where there is plenty of air circulation. But it was so overly sensitive that it would go off nearly every time I used the cooktop. Never mind that nothing was smoking. It would even go off when I used the oven to bake a cake, for god's sake! When it went off while I was gently sauteeing mushrooms, on the back burner with the vent fan already on, I had had enough. In an apartment with no proximity to a furnace or a kerosene heater, I am not concerned about CO. And if every time I cook I have to open every window in the place and put the vent fan on full blast, I'll do without. An alarm that goes off all the time is as bad, or worse, than no alarm at all. I pulled it out and removed the battery.

Chamberlain KLIK1U Clicker Transmitter Universal Garage Door Remote Control

My Genie opener was installed in 1990, and I had dropped the remote for what turned out to be the last time. I had searched and found out that model remote was no longer made. I took a chance and ordered the Clicker. When the Clicker arrived, I found the reference to my unit. I knew about the DIP switches inside my existing remote, and the Clicker instructions told me to program the DIP switches inside the Clicker just the same. (This is only true for specific models of openers, remotes and year installed - others use the programming button on the receiver). I followed the clear directions: they seemed a bit odd, but I followed them exactly (17 clicks) and voila! ~ the garage door opened! I programmed the other door as well, and now I have one compact remote to open both doors. I cannot believe it took me so long to find the solution, and it took less than five minutes to program the two doors. Wow! Am I happy! The instructions are clear and detailed, and you just need to follow them exactly. I actually missed the first time and simply started over, following more carefully.

I got mine set up fairly quickly. Didn't work the first time, so I reversed all the switches on the opener and did it again, and that did the trick. But I then found the range to be very short - less than 10 feet - no good! But what I also found was that I was expecting to press the button 16 times for a Stanley opener, yet 14 did the trick (i.e. the door was activated on the 14th press.) 14 is for a multicode (I take that to mean generic.) So I programmed it again, but this time did the full 16 presses, and now my range is very good - along the lines of 100 feet. Also, if you're curious (I was) - how does it control 2 doors with only 1 set of DIP switches? It remembers the settings during activation. So you set it to match one door, do the programming step, then set it to match the switches on your second door and do the programming step for it.

Belkin 6 Outlet Home/Office Surge Protector with Rotating Plug and 8' Cord

The most interesting feature of this product is the flat plug. It is very thin and allows us to use contacts that would otherwise be obscured by furniture. Other than that, it is a power strip and it serves its purpose.
We purchased the 8ft cord version to use behind a couch and we were very satisfied, so we decided to order another one to use behind a bookcase. The cord didn't need to be that long, so we ordered the 2.5ft cord version... oh surprise!.. this one does not have the flat plug (which was the whole point of the purchase). It has a regular plug just like the powerstrip we wanted to replace. Of course, we are returning it but I wanted to warn other people ...The website description is somewhat misleading and the fact that the picture for the 2.5ft does not show the plug, does not help.

Rotating flat plug is excellent, you can pretty much accomodate any need without blocking plugs, and it really is quite flat. This is just an inexpensive power strip and that's great. I probably have 10 power strips around my house, and who wants to pay a lot for them?

I notice a reviewer complaining about fried equipment. If I had anything expensive to plug in, I'd put it on a Cyberpower or APC UPS with AVR. I don't expect any power strip to do much to protect against big power spikes. Even a high-priced power strip is still just feeding you raw power out of the wall with some sort of switch-to-ground in case something spikey comes along. With the Automatic Voltage Regulating UPS you can get clean power and even Pure Sine Wave output but you won't get that in a cheap little power strip.

HM Digital TDS-EZ TDS Water Quality Tester with Auto-off Function TDS-EZ

This is a great unit, as soon as I got it my tap water in Vegas was 435 which is VERY high, so I tested some bottled water and it was 12, then I went a tested a few different outside water vendors and found a few that are better then bottled water, I have read a bunch of articles and they all way you should drink water 0-50 the lower the better as higher water levels are bad for you. This unit is great as pour a little in (DO NOT PUT THE WHOLE UNIT IN THE WATER, JUST UP TO THE WATER LINE) press the on button and read what it says on the large digital display, if you can not see it in the water, push the second button which will hold the reading so you can take it out of the water to read it.

This cheap (inexpensive) device will instantly verify and, then you can deny or accept water quality for any use. I perpormed several tests for accuracy, consistancy, and ease of use. It is very light weight and easily carried back packing. I will use it in my RV,crusing yatch, camping and anywhere I want to know what is in the water being used. Don't limit yourself to just "drinking water" The use for my original purchase was to observe and verify a new filtration system being installed in my residence. First Alert SA320CN Double Sensor Battery-Powered Smoke and Fire Alarm

I purchased four of these at once to replace my four aging smoke alarms. I like these units because they are inexpensive, compact, easy to install, they have two methods of detecting fire or smoke, and they run on inexpensive, easy-to-replace AA batteries. (I have never liked 9-volt batteries.) If you need a good, well-rated unit in a stand-alone smoke & fire alarm, this is the one for you. If you need a networked unit, I believe First Alert produces such a unit, but that feature will cost you more. The SA320CN is highly recommended.

As a professsional firefighter/paramedic for nearly 13 years, I see a lot of fires. I do know that most detectors out there are NOT dual sensor....they are mostly only ionization detectors that detect flame. Remember it's usually not the fire that will kill you, it's the smoke and it's deadly component carbon monoxide that will end your life. Photoelectric detectors detect these smoke particles and alert you.......ionization types rarely do if it's a slow smoldering fire. If your sleeping, by the time the ionization sensors detect the actual flames, the smoke and the CO will most likely have already gotten to you and you will be dead. That's why it's so VERY VERY important to have a dual-sensor smoke detector. This item particular item IS a dual sensor that is designed to alert you to both smoldering low-flame fires and high intensity/ rapid flame fires. This detector will protect you 100% from fire related death/injury if used properly and placed correctly in your home. Remember to replace the battery every time you switch the clock during daylight savings time or any time the detector chirps. Always look for a photoelectric/ionization detector and buy one. Have one in your hallway, in the main living room at the very least and I always like to put one in each room because I am overly cautious. Also make sure to have a B-C extinguisher on hand near the kitchen to put out kitchen grease fires....the #1 cause of residential structure fires. Hopefully you can put a small one out, but if you discharge the entire extinguisher and the fire is not out......evacuate the house immediately and make sure you or someone called 911 prior to exiting your home. Stay safe !

Petzl E91 Tikkina 2 Headlamp

This Petzl Tikkina 2 headlamp is not as bright as the more expensive models, but is excellent for kids and general camping/household use. If you are looking for a headlamp for caving or biking, this may not be the one for you, but this one is an incredible value and works as advertised. I am very impressed with the quality of each of the components of this headlamp as well as its design, operation, and fit and finish. The economy setting is perfect for reading, the battery compartment is easy to access but appears watertight, and the lamp's on/off switch is far superior to the sliding switches found on lesser models. The only improvement I could suggest is an auto-off feature to preserve the batteries from the forgetfulness of my 4 year-old. Highly recommended!

The Petzl Tikkina 2 is a small, simple headlamp with a rugged design. It does what it's supposed to do. I've also owned a Streamlight headlamp and a Princeton Tec Fuel. Of the three, the Streamlight was a shoddy piece of junk which broke through no fault of my own, and the Princeton Tec was my favorite.

My issue with the Petzl Tikkina 2 is the range of motion of the beam. You can tilt the beam down, but you can't tilt it up. The ability to tilt a headlamp up is useful to me when interacting with people. I don't want to shine light in their eyes, so I flip it upward. I principally use this light to read at night and to change baby diapers. Trust me, in the dead of night, you don't want a beam of light shining in a baby's eyes waking him up any more than he already is.

The Princeton Tec Fuel tilts all the way up and all the way down. It also has a blinky mode which the Petzl doesn't. I dropped my Princeton Tec Fuel on the ground and it broke. Maybe it shouldn't have broken, but I was particularly savage with it and feel perhaps the manufacturers were not to blame in this case. The only reason I didn't get another Princeton Tec is because I like to try new gear. I can compensate for the Tikkina 2's lack of an upward tilt by sliding it higher on my head, but my suggestion to you, gentle reader, would be to look at a Princeton Tec headlamp.
